Influential rock guitarist Jeff Beck performed a stellar opening set during his recent tour stop (along with ZZ Top) at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta. Now in his 70s, Beck hasn’t lost one bit of his magical guitar tone or dexterity. His chiming, stinging guitar filled the amphitheater during his beautiful renditions of the classics “Over The Rainbow” and The Beatles’ “A Day In The Life.” Beck and band easily transitioned from his earlier rock/jazz fusion work (“Morning Dew,” “Going Down”) to his more recent electronica influenced compositions (“Loaded,” “Hammerhead”).
Watching Beck play is very interesting to watch. He doesn’t use a guitar pick/plectrum. He uses his fingers and thumb to strike the strings, while looping his pinky finger over the shortened handle of his Stratacastor’s tremolo bar to add vibrato, warbles or pitch changes.
